Betty Smith Message Board

ALPHONSE DATTOLO posts on 12/19/2007 11:45:06 PM ATree Goows in Brooklyn ranks with the great novels of all time including the greatest- Don Quijote. My favorite character is Fancie. She is the coner stone of the book and I compare her to the great actress Peggy Ann Garner who played Francie in the 1945 movie. There should be more books like "Tree" and more actresses like the angel Peggy Ann Garner!
Katie posts on 2/12/2006 12:38:47 AM I first read A Tree Grows in Brookyn in 1967. I can't count the number of times I have read it since. I have re-read it once a year for many years now. Life in Brooklyn during that era is so clearly described, yet in such a simple way. It is so easy to picture the busy streets, the tenement houses, the streetcars, the people. Even the smell of the shops, the library, and the horses seem real. Katie was my favorite character, and I also liked her sisters, Sissy and Eva. This is my favorite book of all time. I also liked Betty Smith's other three books.

It is a tremendous book, telling a story of our fore-fathers and mothers - newly arriving in this country with nothing but hard work and determination. Try to think what it was like for Francie, Neeley and the Nolan family - and people of that time - who ate only bread and water - had no heat or work, but survived. A lesson for today.

Natoisha curry posts on 2/17/2005 1:27:01 PM obviously the person who said this wasn't very in tune with the book and can't have a clear outlook of the message of the book. This book was one of the best books i've ever read, i thought it was wonderful. If you don't like the book thats fine but please do not be disrespectful to the other people looking at this site who loved it! thanks
