O'Brien paints a vivid picture of the mind of a soldier from that era. How one would deal with any of those situations is beyond me. One should not question how he should feel or how he should write. It is his own mind that he is delving into, and I for one appreciate the quality with which he writes.

O'Brien is trying to say he doesn't even know the truth and he was there. What he wants us to understand is that when he takes away from the factual truth he's adding to the emotional truth so that we can understand how and who the soilders are. A war is nothing without the soildiers. All it is is the soilders.

Why do you present the soldiers with both physical and mental anguish? What is the purpose exactly?
