Jane Rubino Message Board

Bennett B. posts on 7/21/2014 5:15:22 AM Really got into Rubinos series but really looking to put up a note about her publisher. Back about 15 or more years ago, all these small genre presses cropped up, one of them was Write Way out of Colorado that corralled some really great authors, mostly mystery. Not only Rubino but the hipster books of Keith Snyder, Aileen Schumachers Southwest series, LL Thrashers mystery-ghost-cozies and Sandra Brewers "Beltene "novel that the Twilight audience should love. Others too - Pete Abresh, Tom Eslick - all of them top most of the suspense work put out today.
Wendi posts on 7/7/2014 9:36:54 AM Cat Austen and Victor Cardenas are the hottest, funniest, smartest mystery book couple. These are not really "cozy" per se but some of the situations and a lot of the dialogue is just ROTFL funny. I lowered my expectations in mystery reading over the years - they seem to be getting longer with more filler, more violence but the entertainment value is not there. I hate it that this series is only six books long, especially since Raise the Dead ended on such a sequel worthy note.
Patricia posts on 6/23/2014 10:44:18 AM I have been a fan of foodie mysteries for a long time. I enjoy reading the series by Claudia Bishop, Jerrilyn Farmer, Lou Jane Temple, Joanne Pence. I saw a little paperback at the local library book sale, Deadly Morsels, that was four short novels all related to food. In it was one called "Cake Job" by Jane Rubino which was my favorite. I saw where all these short novels used series characters, so I hunted them up. I just fell for Cat Austens big Italian family and for the tall dark and handsome Lt. Cardenas. Good food scenes but the spice is in the dialogue. Not what I would call "light" reading but a lot of fun.

Audrey posts on 3/21/2014 1:09:48 PM I just finished a Rubino-Cat Austen-Victor Cardenas readathon and really liked the series a lot and wonder why it ended. The characters were so true to life you could almost visualize them. The last three had some dark and really surprising moments, especially Plot Twist, and I liked the way each one built on the one before it. Good writing, good series.
Calista posts on 2/17/2014 10:53:31 AM I am with Scout and Fran C. who like the idea of a series. I am also a fan of Bones and also Castle. The only issue would be where would they film it. Rubino gives a good picture of Cat Austen's Atlantic City and the Jersey shore, but would it even be possible to film it in Atlantic City, NJ? It seems like shows like to film where they get the best deal on tax credits and I don't think NJ is one of them. But this is a good, fun series with a great cast of characters.I wish Carlo was my big brother and Jenny was my mom!
Elaine posts on 2/4/2014 5:32:48 AM I was on another book group and the question was if you have ever fallen in love with a literary character. Of course Mr Darcy got a lot of votes but after picking up the first two books of Rubinos series at the library, I am putting Victor Cardenas at the top of the list. The best.
Stillman posts on 12/4/2013 12:00:22 PM Cool series. Rubino has got a good ear. Dialogue just crackles with originality.
Edina posts on 11/5/2013 5:24:09 AM This is one series I read straight through, even got the anthology book. One of the series that makes me wonder why it is only five books and small circulation when some bigger - and worse - writers get noticed. I like the plots but also the snappy dialogue and Victor! I just love his idea of good manners.
madison posts on 10/1/2013 11:34:26 AM I liked Plot Twist a lot.
Erin posts on 9/11/2013 9:33:03 AM So someone passes me these books for a read yesterday and its the first I ever heard of the author. Just another small press writer right? WRONG. I was up all night going thru Death of a DJ and 1/3 thru Fruitcakes now. Already I am totally into the cast of characters. Plan to order a copy of the paperback anthology, the only one missing from the stack.
