Regarding Sarton's journal House By the Sea, it is the first one she wrote after moving to York, Maine after living in Nelson, New Hampshire for 15 years. Plant Dreaming Deep and I Knew a Phoenix are Sarton's first two memoirs, a genre Sarton said were very different from journals and which she preferred because it allowed her to examine thoroughly something or someone who impacted her life more deeply. The journal, she said, was "writing on the pulse."
