Manning Field was a friend of my Father, Larry Roeder. They both served in the AFS in WWII. Last I heard he lived in Brooklyn. Is he still alive?

Geer's book "Mercy in Hell" refers to a Major Fieldhouse who set up a book on the 1942 Derby. I believe this is my grandfather (who was an inveterate gambler) and served in the context of the book. I'm trying to trace any further info - all help much appreciated.

I recently found this book in Archer City, Texas in Larry Mcmurty's book stores. It is a good book and I thought it would make a better movies than Seabiscuit. However, I saw some indication that a movie was made years ago, but I can not find mention of it anywhere. I wonder if it was made and how I could find it. It should be re-made into a movie today.

Is this the A. Geer who wrote Mercy in Hell? If so, I've just come across this book and Evan Thomas's Ambulance in Africa. I am related to Manning Field, his mother Dot Field, and to Ted Chapman, all who had AFS experiences.(Manning is in their books. Dot, his mother, ended up being very prominent in AFS, Mannings 2 brothers flew in WWII. Manning died about 1999). Finding these books and reading them, led me to wonder what happened to Geer and Thomas, and whether either of them had ever run across my grandfather Ted Chapman, who joined AFS later in Europe. Are Geer and Thomas still living? Did Thomas write any more? ( There is another Thomas of course with Newsweek).
Anything you can offer is appreciated.
