Hi Jean!!
I am sssooo disappointed in Land of The Painted Caves! Seems to me you ran out of stories to tell. You should have stopped then at Shelter of Stones and we- your fans could have used our imaginations.
I am unemployed and used what little I had to buy the book - utter waste of money!!!

I just finished The Sacred Mountain, and I thought it was an impressive effort. Any fan of the Earths Childrens books will enjoy it. Take a look.

I'll add my two cents. Many years ago hubby bought me the COTCB on tape. I just had to get the rest of the story. I just loved the series and had to have all the books. I listened to them many times before the last book came out. I bought the last one and could never get into it. Than started reading the reviews. Well lets just say I have not gone back to the last book. It is a shame you didn't get someone to do Ayla the ending she deserved. I recently read 'the sacred mountain' and it was what should have been wrote to end the series.
Sorry Jean M. Auel if this disturbs you.

I will be forever grateful I did not buy this book, but took it out of the library, though I am sorry that they wasted their money. Painted Caves was poorly thought out, poorly written, repetitive (Jean Auel's signature style), boring, unrealistic, did I say repetitive, JUNK. Clan of the Cave Bear one of the best novels ever, they went down hill from there. Whomever edited this one and gave the go ahead for publishing... bet they lost their job. Since Mrs Auel can repeat herself ad nauseum so will I.. it is JUNK.

Read BROUDS_DESTINY and you might witness a reunion between Ayla and Durc. Jean is up into her 70's and can't be expected to provide an ending to the story any different than the one she gave in book number 6.

Jane Auel, Please bring us full circle and have Ayla and her family make the trip back so she can see her son Durc, who is most probably leader of the Clan and has his own family.

I have read all of Jean Auel books about Earth Children and, for the most part, enjoyed them. Number 6 was something of disappointment but I can understand her age affecting her work since she and I are from the same decade. I understand how she repeats herself. The mistakes seem to lie with her publisher, who should be the one who is ashamed of number 6. Someone has mentioned fanfiction, so I have taken to reading a few chapters and find some very refreshing. Try searching the Internet for BROUDS_DESTINY and see if you might agree. Be sure to use the lower connector. If nothing else, Jean Auel has opened up characters for another generation to write about.
