Thank you Angela.....and Anita. I have read this forum for years. And I finally had to just add my to cents. So much of this seems to be common sense. Again, I know there are the facts. And they ARE very important. I also respect an authors creative efforts. Especially when they state that in the preface. It's the right thing to do by the author! I hope no one here feels my comments are offensive or a direct attempt to not re-examine the truth. I'm only looking at the books as entertainment. Thanks again. E.

Great sleuthing on your part, Edgar. It's nice to have an additional, knowledgeable person on the message board to help us fill in gaps and help answer our numerous questions. I wanted to point out before, even history books which are supposedly nonfiction accounts of events, can be considered biased and downright wrong, depending on which side of the fence you are on and depending on the reliability of the witnesses and reporters. Time and again, history has to be rewritten. Like you said, if you go by the very clear preface to each book by the Countess where she states her intentions and necessary exchanges of events and details, you can accept that it is still nonfiction inasmuch as it can be.

Anita, I'm so glad you are enjoying Google Earth. Something else I wanted to add. In the book, The Well Mannered Assassin, it's my belief that the Countess patterned part of this book based on the balls and parties that were held at the time of her second son to the Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein. All of which took place in Bavaria/Austria. Research that and see what you think. Ava Gardner had to be there. Also in one of the books written by the Countess she states that her son and new daughter in law were the guests of the Duchess of Windsor in the early 70's. The Duchess had been to ill to attend the wedding but had the couple to Paris for a post honeymoon visit. I think the wedding took place in Mondsee Austria. Bavaria and Mondsee are a hop skip. Also there is a lake there as in the book by the Countess. Again, the Countess does what she does best. Hiding the truth to protect. All, I think the dates and events in the books are very mixed up. But for a reason. The Countess takes the best of the bits and put them together to the best possible way for the story she is telling. Again, that is just my opinion. Others may certainly not feel the same way. Best regards to all.

Edagar and Sharon, now you have got me "hooked" on Google Earth ! Really fun, and I love "sleuthing". It has always been one of my hobbies. I really cannot say just how close or not that the Countess is to her 3 boys, but I do know for a fact that her grandchildren that are attending the University of Madrid are living in her Madrid house, so she must be close to them. Also one of her sons has an active interest in the making and selling the Cheese at the Finca Pascualete, which will soon be available to purchase. "End of an Epoch": Presently she is working with a Publisher to get the book printed in English. Angela, just like you, I cannot wait and am eager to read it!

You sound like lots of fun Angela!

Edgar and Sharon, thanks for all your info! I will eagerly look up all these things, although I must admit, I've already spied on Aline's Marbella home via Google Earth! Not to be creepy, you know, just to see how magnificent it really is. Out of all the residences, that's the one I would have wanted to live in most, you know, to walk on the beach and go to all the local eateries. Sounds like sooo much fun.

The Countess is only selling a fraction of her jewels at the Sotheby's auction in Geneva on May 17th. She is offering six jewels and one evening bag. The jewels include a green diamond necklace and earrings, a ruby necklace, ruby and diamond earrings, a lovely ruby ring, a diamond Van Cleef watch, and a diamond bracelet. If you would like to see the jewels yourself, they are Lots 407-413 (Page 25) in the Sotheby's e-catalog "Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels" and can be found on Sotheby's webpage. Tried to post a direct link to the page but the forum’s filter would not let it through.

Of all the joy that the Countess has brought to her readers though her books, it is sad to hear that she is not on better terms with her sons. I hope she is able to see and spend time with her son's families. She is and remains a lovely gracious lady who was kind enough to give us a glimpse into her life through her book. I am eagerly awaiting for End of an Epoch to be translatted into English? Does anyone know when this will happen?

You know, I have noticed in the books by the Countess, that she gives just the right mix of truth, with the trade of who, what and when! ALSO, if you really look close all the pieces can fit together IF you do your own sleuthing! IT IS FUN! For example, if you do a Google Earth search, you can find the home of Luis and the Countess in Marbella. As she states, it has two Moorish domes and is on the beach. Also, Google this. "picture of the Romanones children dancing in Marbella" Vogue took this picture. Its on the internet. OK then search Los Monteros Marbella. This is the area which the Countess states her Marbella home was located. IT is obvious along the coast line which house was hers, when you look at the picture of the children, pool, palm trees and domes!!! It is truly an amazing place....just as she describes in her books. The same thing can be done on Google earth for her home in Madrid and Pascualete. YOU JUST HAVE TO READ! When she was helping the KGB agent defect in her book, The Spy Wore Silk, she states that there were only two houses between her house and another large street in Madrid. Also internet articles regarding recent zoning changes of the neighborhood the Countess lives in, virtually states the address. It's all really amazing!

How interesting, Edgar. Now, see how relatively easy it was to figure out that the two balls were one and the same? That just proves to me why the Countess had to be so clever and careful in disguising other details of the book. If she only uses a thin veil to keep the book quote nonfiction, end quote, imagine how easy it would be for our prying minds to crack all of the codes.
