The Great Rascal: The Life and Adventures of Ned Buntline by Jay Monaghan

Ned Buntline is most remembered for being the king of the dime novels. However, he was more famous in the east and for more contributions to the literary world. He operated several of his own magazines and contributed to many others. He considered himself a reformer and used the power of the pen to persuade others to way of thinking. He jumped on the bandwagon for temperance. He hated the British class structure and wanted things to be done for the common man. He wasn't above being a hypocrite, as he frequently imbibed himself. He also had a number of wives, some of them at the same time. He started a political party called the Americans, which evolved into the Know Nothings. He became their champion in newspapers across the country. He campaigned vigorously for anyone who believed in their cause. He never went anywhere without writing about it, including family vacations. He met Buffalo Bill, Wyatt Earp, and other characters from the Wild West and wrote about their exploits in his dime novels. He was an extremely interesting and sometimes eccentric writer..
