Book Review By Nancy Larrabee
Blue Plate Special by Frances Norris

Julia Daniel is stuck in a dead-end job as a food stylist for a little known food magazine called "Mangia!" in Los Angeles. An inside joke with her friend Claire at the magazine is that any dish Julia works her magic on is known as a “blue plate special”. Julia is happy to have a job, it pays the rent for her run-down aparment but she still dreams of being a photographer.
Her father's death from a plane crash has left her reeling emotionally in its aftermath. She has to deal with her stepsister Constance back home in Kentucky. Julia was estranged from her father because of his second marriage, and a constant debate over her dreams to be a photographer, never got the chance to reconcile with him. Being back in Kentucky as part of Constance's family reunion awakens all sorts of feelings and memories. Her friends convince her to go a therapist to get help.
Julia gets sent to Arizona on assignment with Richard Stone another photographer. When he gets on the plane with her, Julia sees him in a different light. Their assignment seems like a fruitless one, to photograph southwestern fusion cuisine. They find out from her friend Claire what back room financial deals have been made and simply put the magazine is about to go under. Julia and Richard resign from the magazine and decide to follow their photography dreams together.
