On the planet Draag, the company animals are not cats, dogs or hamsters, but humans. Terr is the companion of a little Draag girl. One day, he manages to escape finds some other humans but they are savage. Unlike them, Terr can read and this is why he is quickly adopted by the free humans, as he proves to be very useful for their survival and for their purpose of understanding the Draag's writings.
But the situation changes dramatically: the Draags decide to exterminate all the humans as they fear for their security.
Terr, thanks to his intelligence and his desire for freedom, tries to make the other humans understand that there might be a way to escape this tragic destiny.
