Thursday's Child by Sonia Hartnett

Harper Flute is a young girl who lives in the dry farms of Australia. She and her family strugle with poverty as the land she lives on doesn't give crops. Harper's shanty falls down leaving her with no home. Her father turns to alchohol and her mother struggles with the disappearance of her children. Tin the second eldest son spends all his time digging and makes hidden underground tunnels under their new house. He never comes out. The youngest child Caffy dies from falling in a well, and Harpers eldest sister Audrey goes to work for the farmer down the road. Things don't go to plan and she comes back. The family re-uild their lives.
