Clarissa is visiting the home of her dead father's brother, Uncle Paul Hessenfield. She discovers that her uncle is involved with the Jacobites, a party of men determined to put another man on the throne. Clarissa knows that this is treason, and Paul sends her home earlier than expected because he fears than an uprising is inevitable. On the way home, Clarissa is kidnapped by the Jacobites because they think that she's a spy. If it wasn't for young Dickon Frenshaw, Clarissa could have lost her life.
Dickson frees Clarissa, and they both realize that they are in love. Sadly, their romance is interrupted when Dickon fights in a battle, is captured, and transported to Virginia for fourteen years. The years pass by, and Clarissa is faithful to Dickon's memory, cherishing the hope that he will come to her when his sentence is over. But when she is of age to marry, she is gently pressured by the family to marry Lance Clavering. Lance is kind, thoughtful, and loving, and yet Clarissa can't forget Dickon. Lance fights a duel to protect Clarissa's honor when she is accused of being another man's lover. Lance loses the duel and his life; so, Clarissa, her niece Sabrina, and their two children move into the country to escape the scandal. And finally, Dickon returns to Clarissa. Clarissa is anxiously awaiting for Dickon to reclaim his love for her, but strangely, he never does. Then the terrible truth dawns on her: Dickson is in love, no longer with Clarissa, but with Sabrina, a beautiful and much younger woman. | ||
