Book Review By Jack Goodstein
The Midnight Examiner by William Kotzwinkle

Kotzwinkle's comic novel tells the story of how the editor and staff of a sleazy publishing company specializing in a variety of sordid magazines, like “The Midnight Examiner,” which is a scandal sheet, tries to save an actress in porno films from the clutches of a Mafia boss. Howard Halliday, the editor, befriended Mitzi Mouse, the actress, when she modeled for one of his magazines. When she accidently shoots the gangster in the leg during a movie shoot, she comes to Halliday's office for help.

He mobilizes all the members of his staff to protect her, using a variety of comic weapons including a blow gun with poison darts and a fishing rod. Later Mitzi and one of the other editors is kidnaped, and the staff goes to the home of the gangster to try and save them.
