Book Review By L. Watson
Tangled by Mary Balogh

Rebecca, Lady Cardwell, is devastated by the death of her husband Julian during the Crimean War. But Julian's foster brother and closest friend, Lord David Tavistock, proposes marriage. Even though Rebecca thinks David is a scoundrel and a rake who fathered an illegitimate child, she agrees because Julian's death leaves her destitute.

What Rebecca does not know is that David has always loved Rebecca and has always covered up and accepted the blame for Julian's misdeeds, including Julian's illegitimate child, in order to preserve Rebecca's image of Julian as a kind and good husband. So, David also does not tell her of Julian's constant cheating or that Julian was killed in a duel over a married woman he was having an affair with. Instead, he tries to win Rebecca by being a faithful loving husband despite her mistaken belief in his character.

Rebecca is torn by the two images she has of David. He seems to be such a good man, everything a woman could want in a husband and his lovemaking is better than she experienced with Julian, the man she loved. But she cannot forget all the bad things that David had done in the past and cannot admit she is falling in love with David. But the wronged husband of the woman that Julian was having an affair with shows up to confront Rebecca and the secrets begin to spill out.
