Rebecca Shaw was once madly in love with Christopher Sinclair and they were engaged to be married. But Christopher broke off the engagement to marry a wealthy woman. Becky has never been able to love anyone else but she has agreed to marry Philip Everett even though neither feels a passion for the other. Then Christopher returns to the village after the death of his wealthy wife.
Becky keeps meeting Christopher in the village, at the school where she teaches, and at her home. Becky cannot ignore Christopher even though she hates him for breaking her heart. Christopher continues to engages Becky in conversations which suggest that he still cares about her. He apologises for abandoning her, and kisses her, much to Becky's confusion. Becky is torn as she remembers what Christopher used to be like and sees how he is treating her now which all seems at odds with the stories about the callous way he treated his wife and his unexpected betrayal of their love. She finds she has never stopped loving Christopher but now she is to marry Philip. | ||
