Book Review By L. Watson
Lady of Fortune by Mary Jo Putney

Becuase of the French Revolution, Comtesse Marie-Christine D'Estelle was stripped of her title, family and fortune by the terror. But she escapes to England. There, she faced even greater danger at the hands of her guardian, Lewis, Lord Radcliffe, whose lust and demand that she become his bride filled her with loathing. Christine saves herself by fleeing again to Regency London.

Hiding from Radcliffe and without any funds, Christine renames herself Christa, disguises herself as a servant and finds work in the household of Alex, Lord Kingsley. The shy but handsome Viscount is drawn to the new pretty, dark-haired servant. Despite the gap between master and servant, the two begin to awaken a passion in each other. Christine does not tell Alex who she really is for fear of discovery by Radcliffe. Alex thinks of bridging the gap, when fate intervenes and he finds himself in unwanted circumstances where he should propose marriage to someone else.
