Miranda James was born of educated parents but became a London street urchin when her penniless mother died. She picks pockets to earn a measly living. At a dramatic hanging, she attemps to pick the pocket of Cam Gordon's friend. Cam Gordon, a stern scotsman, is unwilling to let her go and reports the crime to the autorities. Soon Miranda is sentenced to hang unless... she agrees to become Cam Gordon's indentured servant. Having nowhere to go, Miranda agrees and finds herself cooking, washing and picking after her arrogant master. She finds out he is a writer of violent mass market books and starts and starts understanding his disagreeable disposition and violent moods. She also impresses him with her ability to read and soon adds secretary to her chores.
As they become lovers, Miranda grows as a woman and starts to warm up to her master. Unbeknownst to him, she also starts developing her own writing talent. She also finds out that Cam has the loyalties of his fellow countrymen and that he is funneling the sums advanced by his editor into a group of rebels who plan to undermine the Hanovers' position and help the return of Bonnie Prince Charlie. When Miranda stops Cam from actually joining his co-conspirators in action, they learn that the coup failed and that all the men involved have to flee England. Miranda begs Cam to take her with her but he refuses, telling her he never wants to see her again. But that is not the end for Miranda, as she comes into her own as a writer, with her first novel. Heartbroken, she finds the strength to live and thrive. From friends, she hears that Cam is now a smuggler based in Cornwall. Miranda tries to forget all about it until, by happenstance, she learns the truth about her parentage and goes to Cornwall for some answers. | ||
