Felicity, Lady Wren, 26 and beautiful, is finally free of the older husband she had to marry for money. She goes to London looking for a husband who is charming, handsome, close to her own age, wealthy, titled and who enjoys Regency Society life. In London, she meets Lord Edmond Waite, a handsome rake. Unfortunately, Felicity discovers he wants her as his mistress. She intends to make him interested in marriage. She plans to make him jealous and enlists the help of her oldest friend, Tom Russell, who is in London squiring her and her younger twin sisters about.

Tom and Felicity had been in love before she was forced to marry her late husband. But Tom does not fit Felicity's new plans. Tom is a country farmer, not titled and with little interest in London society. However, Tom agrees to pretend to be a devoted suitor in order to make Lord Edmond believe that he has competition. But Tom's attentions start to awaken old feelings in Felicity. She has to wonder if she really wants a husband with a title and to spend the rest of her days as part of London society.
