Molly Ballard was caught red handed by Will Lyman stealing $5000. Will is a FBI agent investigating a horse race fraud scheme and finds he cannot let Molly go without getting her help in return, for Molly is a groom on the Wyland Farm and can help check identities of horses running (and winning) against odds.
At first, Will Lyman figures that it's irrelevant that her crime was done in the name of Molly's five brothers and sisters, he simply wants to use her to get to the bottom of the truth. And she is way too young for him, he thinks. But both Molly and Will find it difficult to stay uninvolved with one another. But that is not the only thing getting in the way of their investigation, as horses start getting horribly mutilated. Will and Molly wonder if the mutilations are linked to the fraud scheme. Or maybe the slashings bear more resemblance to a violent disappearance twenty years ago. | ||
