Book Review By L. Watson
Fair Game by Liz Young

The story starts with Harriet learning from her old friend Rosie that Nina, her old school rival and person she has always envied, suspects that her boyfriend is seeing someone else. Harriet has to confess that she thinks she is the someone else.

The first time Harriet saw John, she thought he was the most gorgeous bloke she had ever seen. But she saw he was with Nina. But after John gives her money for a taxi, Nina has to repay him by taking him for a drink. They keep running into one another and enjoying each others company. John kisses her, and she is left breathless and uncertain. When John gets sick and is all alone, Harriet nurses him. She starts to think that if Nina is not going to look after John, then he is fair game for her to have as a boyfriend.

Harriet also has to contend with the problems of her friends. Sally lives with her along with her baby son, the result of a one night stand. Jacko, her best friend from university, moves in. Sally starts to fall for Jacko, but he seems interested in Harriet's other roommate, the beautiful Frieda. Her neighbour, Helen, is struggling to look after her kids after her husband left for a younger woman. Harriet does not know what is the current state of John's relationship with Nina. Rosie's gossip does not help.
