Lord Stanhope's Proposal by Jessica Benson

Tristan, the Earl of Stanhope, is a confirmed bachelor but sought after for marriage since he is handsome, wealthy, intelligent, and a Corinthian. He has to go to the village of Deepdene to rescue his cousin Ossie. Ossie and his witless friends have gone to Deepdene and for fun, pretend to court Calista Ashton, the village spinster.   They will ruin Calista's reputation. Tristan has to go and put a stop to Ossie's activities.

Bored with his string of vacuous mistresses and empty-headed society debutantes, Tristan is challenged by Calista's wit, charmed by her lack of artifice and shocked by her terrible clothes sense. He falls in love.

Calista cannot believe that such a gorgeous person would really be interested in her. Calista cannot believe his declarations of love because of the interfering of the not too intelligent occupants of the village. Alternative suitors, former mistresses and interfering chaperones pop in and out of this charming, light-hearted story.
