A War Apart by Eric Hobbs

After graduating high school, Eric Williams takes a week long trip to London to escape his painful and lonely life. While in London, Eric runs into Sarah Wellington and falls instantly in love. After a two day courtship, Eric asks Sarah to return to Annapolis, Maryland with him. Sarah agrees to move to America and they leave to spend a life time of happiness in the United States.
However, when they return to America, Eric receives a letter that he is being drafted into the Army. After basic training, Eric is ordered to Vietnam and forced to leave Sarah behind. When Eric arrives in Vietnam he refuses to fire a shot because he believes that if he does not take part in the fighting, he will not die. Eric, when he first arrives in Vietnam, does not care about his fellow soldiers. Eric only cares about returning home to Sarah. One night, his base camp is attacked by Viet Cong soldiers. During the attack, Eric once again refuses to take part in the combat. Only when an enemy soldier comes with in arms length of him does he fire his weapon.
After witnessing the death of the enemy soldier by his bullet, Eric mentally snaps and deserts his platoon in battle. Eric, however does not make it far before he is captured and taken to a prisoner of war camp. There at the POW camp, Eric meets people that changes his outlook on life. The camp is full of pilots who volunteered for the war. At first, Eric does not understand why people would volunteer to be away from the ones they love, but after spending time with them, Eric understands why soldiers fight. Eric become honored to be with the other prisoners in the camp, but he still wants to go home to Sarah's loving arms. Now Eric must find a way to escape the camp and return home to the love of his life.
