Book Review By Samantha Marsh
Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian

The first in a series by Patrick O'brian following the exploits of Captain Jack Aubrey of the British Royal Navy and his good friend Dr. Stephen Maturin, naval surgeon and spy. Set during the Napoleonic wars the book takes place mostly on the open ocean, and is rich in historical detail. Their is much technical jargon regarding the operating of the ship, but this is supplemented by the varied characters and their developed interaction. Their are intensely described sea battles as well as description surrounding the sailors everyday life. At the center of the novel is the friendship between Aubrey and Maturin, two radically different men who are drawn together by a love of music. Maturin is an especially interesting character, a brilliant surgeon and naturalist, as well as a particulary apt spy for the Britain.
