This is an absorbing, yet heartbreaking story about a young boy named Jip. When he was a baby, his mother a black, white mixed person ran away in search of the underground rail road. His mother laid him down on the ground when a detective came and took his mother back. The preacher in the town finds and sends the baby to the local poor farm where he is mistaken as a gypsy babe because his skin is so white. As Jip, grows older he is forced to take care of the residents at the poor farm. Most of the residents were mentally ill. One day, a raging lunatic, named Putnam Nelson, is sent to the poor farm. JIp learns that "Put" is really a very wise man, but has crazy spells at times and doesn't know what he's doing. Soon, Jip finds out that he is part black and his rightful owner has sent detectives after him to bring him bacj to the slave farm. He and his friend Put flee to the underground railroad. | ||
