Shattered by Dean Koontz

Alex and Colin are driving from Pennsylvania to San Francisco. Alex just married Colin's sister and since Colin's parents are no longer alive, he lives with his sister. They are moving across the country to start their new life together and Alex thinks the long drive would be a great chance to get to know Colin a little better. From the moment they pull out of the driveway of their old house, they notice a moving van, not of their own, following them. It follows them all the way across Pennsylvania and into Ohio. They thought they lost the van when they decided to change routes, but then realize they didn't when someone tried to pick the lock of their motel room. Unaware of the reason for somebody following them they just assume it must be a madman and try numerous ways to lose him along their cross country trek. They need to find a way to make it home without being driven off the road and killed by this man in the moving van and everytime they think they have lost him, he seems to know every move they are going to make before they do.
