The Make-up Girl by Andrea Semple

Faith Wishart is a make-up girl in more ways than one. She works at the make-up counter for Keats cosmetics in Blakes department store in Leeds. However, Faith has told her mother that she works at a public relations firm, has gotten many promotions, has a boyfriend named Adam, who is a lawyer. Faith has made up everything she has told her mother. Faith's lies make her mother happy because her mother's been in a fragile emotional state ever since the death of Faith's father.

Faith has a series of mishaps. Faith does not get hired for a job at a PR firm because she lied about her grades and her experience on her application. She is in trouble at work because she was absent to help her friend Alice who is having panic attacks and is about to become an unwed mother. Faith discovers another tenant in her building, Frank, unconscious and not breathing. Although he has never been friendly to her, she revives him and gets him to the hospital. Then Faith's sister, Hope, returns after two years in Australia. Hope has a new yoga DVD and is getting married to a fitness celebrity. Faith feels jealous, but even worse, everyone, especially Faith's mom, expects her to attend the wedding with Adam.

By strange chance, Faith meets a man named Adam, who takes her to bed on the first date. But before she can introduce him to her family, he tries to force himself on her but is stopped by Frank. Faith loses her hoped-for-boyfriend Adam and then loses her job. Faith fears she is going to have to tell her mother about all the stories she has made up.
