Book Review By Samantha S.
Heaven Help Us! by Herbert Tarr

Gideon Abel is a young recently ordained Rabbi, beginning his career as the spiritual leader of the suburban, conservative community of Hillendale. Written in diary format (each month's installment describes a different adventure in which Gideon's actions are proved wrong), this novel depicts the first year of Gideon's life as a pulpit rabbi.

From his first Bar Mitzvah, to his first wedding and his first funeral, Gideon learns about working with people, struggling to explain his liberal, idealistic mentality to the business people of the suburbs. He meets many droll characters: Mrs. Greenwood, who makes it her personal mission to fatten him up and marry him off, Dore Redmont, who needs something to do with his life now that he has made his fortune, and Barney Singer, the Robert's Rules of Order toting president of the Temple.
