Murders of Richard III by Elizabeth Peters

While vacationing in England, Jacqueline Kirby joins her friend Thomas for a weekend in Ricardian scholarship. Set at the small town family estate of Thomas' friend Richard, a group of relatives and friends gather for their annual meeting to share and present papers based on information about the famous monarch and absolving him of all involvement in the deaths for which he is accused. Since some letters have turned up proving these theories, Jacqueline has been asked to authenticate them before the press hears the news.

In addition to the excitement of the documents, the group uses the weekend to role play, that is, dress, talk, eat, and dance like characters from the era of Richard III. The weekend turns sinister when each character, in turn, is attacked in such a way that mirrors the way their historical figure was attacked (ie. Clarence in a barrel of malmsey whiskey). Jacqueline must figure out why the Ricardians are being attacked and, of course, by whom.
