Sandry, a girl of eleven is saved from a magically hidden room by a powerful mage who has sought her out, who goes by the name of Niko. But, he also seeks out 3 others. Briar, a young thief who was to be sentenced to labor or death; Daja, a young trader girl who Niko found after a mid-winter storm devoured her ship and relatives, and Tris, who has never been wanted and was taken from another temple where she was a nuisance.
They all have hidden magic that they don'y know about till Niko reveals it to them. Sandry, the gift of thread-work , Briar, who has a thing with earth, Daja, metal-work, and Tris, who is tied to the weather in a strange way. But, a large earthquake that wasn't supposed to come is sent their way by a foolish mage who thought he could trap the workings of the most magical of all, Mother Earth. He is devoured by the magic, but in the crystals he tried to trap the quake in, the quake gathered enough strength to rock the coast for miles. In its wake, it traps the children in a cave.
