Book Review By Carrie Ann Kimball
Coldwater by Mardi McConnochie

In a novel some hat based on the Bronte family, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Wolf live in Coldwater, a prison island near Australia. After their father, captain of the prison, is shot, the sisters take up writing for as profession. When the sisters and their father wait for an arriving ship of convicts, Emily's attention is immediately drawn to one of the prisoners, O'Connell. Though she dislikes him at first, Emily falls in love with him. Captain Wolf is unsuspecting of the relationship, and begins to feel for O'Connell as though he were a son.

Somehow, the captain is informed of the relationship. He takes away rights previously given to prisoners as well as to his daughters. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne, highly intelligent for women in the nineteenth century, are discouraged from writing, and some of their manuscripts are destroyed. Captain Wolf is mentally weakened from the relationship between Emily and O'Connell, and spends much of his time in bed.

Little does the captain know, Anne has been meeting someone on her walks, the brother of a prisoner. Captain Wolf is well known for never having a prisoner escape while he is in charge, but rumors begin of a planned escape.
