Fool's Paradise by Tori Phillips

In 1586 the young and beautiful Lady Elizabeth Hayward finds herself in dire straits. Escaping a cruel betrothed, Sir Robert, she is putting life, limb, and her heart on the line. To safely go to her godmother, Queen Elizabeth, she pairs up with the famous court jester, Richard Tarleton.

To avoid Sir Robert's men Tarleton comes up with a plan, disguise the fair Elizabeth as a jester's aprentice! However, even in a lad's clothing, the desire Tarleton feels for this unatainable beauty can't be squashed.

They give into their rampant desire and become passionate lovers. When they reach London, however, the pair must try to part and instead of severing the betrothal, Queen Elizabeth demands that Lady Elizabeth Hayward marry Sir Robert!

When Elizabeth discovers that Tarleton's child grows inside her, her resolve to find someway out of her engagement to Sir Robert increases. When she and Tarleton are caught in a passionate embrace, Tarleton is found guilty of treason and sentenced to death.
