391 AD:
The Great Library of Alexandria is destroyed, along with its priceless collections of artworks, maps, records and day to day living. But not all is destroyed. The cream of the crop is secretly taken away by Junius Venator. He sails to a far distant land, to hide the treasures until a day when they can be safe...

1991 AD:
A United Nations Chartered flight is hijacked with the Secrectary-General, Hala Kamil, on board. It crashes in an icey fjord in Greenland, and all are killed but 3. The Secretary-General and two flight attendants. Dirk Pitt, Special Projects Director of NUMA, who is in the area looking for a lost soviet submarine, rescues the three with the aid of some other NUMA people including Al Giordino, Assitant Projects Director and sharer in many of his crazy adventures.

Meanwhile:
Nearby, a team of archeologist excavating a Greenland hunter village occupied between 200 and 400 AD. They find a Roman coin from the era, and find it hard to beleive that Romans did indeed cross the oceans to America and Greenland.

The rest of the book is a story of a family looking to take over the Third World Countries, a search for the long lost treasures of the Libray of Alexandria, rescuing two presidents, a Secretary-General and a highly respected senator.
