Dee has taken care of her land for ten years all on her own. She's fought off men and marriage proposals, but when Lucas Cochran comes back to town and befriends her, she finds herself falling in love, but she is suspicious that he only wants her for her land. Her best friend, Olivia, is the proper daughter of the town banker, but she finds herself falling in love with a Mexican drifter.

When Kyle Bellamy and his men attack Dee's farm, Luis, Olivia's true love, helps Lucas defend her. Luis and Dee are both injured badly, and afterward Olivia and Luis decide to get married. Dee is hurt worse, so Lucas takes her to his ranch to recover. He has destroyed her water supply on her land so no one else tries to take it, and when she returns home she refuses to talk to him again.

Kyle sets about trying his best to convience Dee he did it out of love, and he wants her to marry him, for love, and not for her land.
