Book Review By Sharren Khoo
An Offer from a Gentleman by Julia Quinn

It was love at first sight for Benedict Bridgerton, who was often referred to by society as Number 2, much to his mortification. The mysterious lady in silver took his breath away the moment she arrived at the masquerade his mother (Violet Bridgerton) hosted. They shared an unforgettable evening of teasing, dancing and finally, a passionate kiss but before he could unveil her identity, she had fled away, leaving behind a snowy handkerchief. He was not unable to track her down nor was he able to forget her.

Sophie Beckett had the moment of her life at the masquerade but she was a fraud. She was a servant since her horrible step mother, Araminta, was in charge of the household following the death of her father, the Earl of Penwood. Desperate to escape the evil clutches of Araminta, she escaped to seek employment elsewhere. She could not believe it but it was Benedict who came to her rescue when young Cavender, her employer, tried to compromise her. She could not stop the sharp pang of sorrow when she discover he did not recognise her but knowing it was for the best, she kept her silence and her forbidden love.

There was something about Sophie that brought out the best in Benedict. Except for the lady in silver, he had never felt himself more drawn to another woman in his life. Accepting the fact that he desired her, he decided to make Sophie his mistress. He would provide well for her and any children resulting from the product of their union but Sophie would have none of it. How could she? She had suffered tremendously throughout her life and she would never want to subject her future children to the same fate. She was after all, a bastard and the gap between her and Benedict seemed too big to cross. He might not even forgive her for her deception if and when he discovered the ugly truth.
