Kazunomiya: Prisoner of Heaven by Kaythrn Lasky

Kazunomiya, also known as Chikako to her friends, is a Chinese princess who lived in an Imperial Palace in 1858.   She is in the midst of all the court ladies, her mom, the late emperor's favorite ningyo, her auntie, a good friend of her mother, and Lady Tomaki, the cousin of prince Arisugawa, the person Chikako is supposed to marry.   Then there start to be problems between the Emperor, Chikako's brother, and the shogun, or warlord of China.   They decide to have Chikako marry Yoshi, the soon to be shogun, in three years. Chikako is very unhappy about this because she liked Arisugawa, and so is Auntie, so they meet in secret at a sumo wrestling match.   Then Auntie dies, which devastates Chikako.   Also, the emperor likes Lady Tomaki, which makes the palace ladies jealous, so they drug Lady Tomaki and place her in a room with a sleeping drunk man to dishonor her, but Chikako and her servant girls brother remove the drunk man before anything bad happens. Chikako has to decide what she is going to do about her planned marriage to the shogun.
