The Lost King by Margeret Weis

Dion, a seventeen year old raised by a man he only knows as Platus is thrown into a wirlwind adventure of galactic proportions when Derek Sagan, warlord and Citizen General kills Platus. Dion Escapes with Tusk and XJ-27, where he is introduced into a life of space and war having being raised in the country, secluded from any modern city's.

Once Sagan captures and old friend and lover Maigrey, Dion is lured to the warlord's ship. Aboard Phoenix he is shown his true self, and the secret of the blood royal is revealed to him, all though he is told he will never be able to control his mental powers. He learns his true destiny, and finds out he is a Starfire, next in line for the kingdom of the galaxy.

Peter Robes, president/dictator tries to send Sagan to his death against an invading alien army. Wiith the aid of an old enemy. Maigrey and Sagan unite against the forces to save Dion.
