Dirty White Boys by Stephen Hunter

Dirty White Boys is the story of Lamar Pye's prison break and his life on the run. Lamar has an altercation with a tough black dude in McAlester State Penitentiary in Oklahoma. He knows that this will eventually lead to his demise so he gets his mentally handicapped cousin Odell and his artist cellmate Richard and they break out of the Penitentiary. Russel "Bud" Pewtie is then called to track down the escaped convicts. Once on the outside, Lamar kills a delivery truck driver to get his vehicle and ends up at the Stepford's home, an elderly couple living quietly. Lamar steals their guns and tries to make a man out of Richard who is weak. While at the Stepfords Bud catches up with them and there is a bog shoot out where officer Ted is killed. Lamar and company go back out on the road and wind up in texas where they rob a Denny's. Bud eventually tracks down the group. There is another big gun battle where Bud get seriously injured and Lamar's group has some casualties. After his loss, Lamar seeks revenge for what Bud Pewtie did to him.
