Midnight Star by Catherine Coulter

Chauncey FitzHugh had a plan. She would seduce Delaney Saxton, bring him to his knees and destroy him; just the way he ruined her father. But she did not plan on him being so handsome, sweet and charming. She created endless opportunities with the elusive man and was rather successful (without her knowing) because Del found the English heiress breath-taking and regarded her as a mysterious puzzle, waiting to be solved.

However, quite accidentally she was hurt, riding astride a wild horse. Del charged to the rescue, took her under his wings and nursed her back to health. Everything went according to plan but she had not counted on falling in love. Initially, she wanted to set fire on his warehouse to cripple him financially. Answering her heart, she aborted the plan at the 13th hour, discarding the flickering match. She did not however, realised she was surrounded by gunfire. Panic, she ran off as the fire went out of control, and later the place exploded.

Bitter fate soon revealed that Del was honourable and innocent. Her father's friend, Paul Montgomery was responsible, had lied to her and gobbled up her father's wealth. Del would never forgive her for her deceit and her initial vile intensions if and when he found out the truth. If only she could convince him of her love. It was the only genuine thing among all the farce and lies in their lives. Both their lives were in imminent danger as Paul set out to keep her silent.
