Young Vanya Smetzki first found out about his Jewish identity when he was a young boy in Russia. When his parents decide to move the family to America after the fall of comunism, he and his family stay with some family in Ukraine. While adventuring in the woods one day as a young boy, Ivan stumbles upon a chasm and what looks like a young woman lying asleem on the forest floor. As leaves rustle, afraid, Ivan uses his tracking talent to scurry home to safety.

Now he is an American scholar who travels back to his homeland to continue his studies. while visiting his relatives in Ukraine again, he once again stumbles across the same chasm. This time he is determined to figure out the mysteries of this chasm deep in the forest...
