Return to the Stars by Edmond Hamilton

When John Gordon starts believing that his advantures as Zart Arn were just a fantasy, he is brought to stars again, this time in full flesh.

Gordon meets his beloved Lianna, and flies with her to her home planet. On the way, they are forced to change course and land on Lianna's cousin's planet, inhabiteed by non-humanoid race. Narat Tein (Lianna's cousin) is organizing a revolt against Lianna, with the help of many non-humanoid races, as well as Counts of Outer Space and strange creatures following them.

The creatures, clad in gray, posses great mental powers, and often control and attack humans (and other races) using their minds.

As Gordon, and the rulers of the Galactic Empire learn more about them, they realize that those "people" already attacked the Empire once, and were defeated using the "Destroyer". Now they want Gordon, because he already used the weapon. Only they don't know that Gordon did not know anything about it when he used the weapon.

Assisted by the former ruler of the Cloud - Sherr Kan, who was defetaed in the last war, Gordon escapes captivity and learns the secrets of the gray-clad race.

A war breaks out with the home-planet of Lianna being in its center. For a brief time, Narat takes control, but is killed before Lianna transfers control to him. The Empire uses the "Destroyer" again, and defeats the gray-clad creatueres.
