The Seeing Stone - Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

In this second installment of The Spiderwick Chronicles, Jared, Simon and Mallory Grace are settling into life at Spiderwick Estate, the home of their crazy Aunt Lucinda. Jared and Simon are twins, although their personalities are quite different. Jared is moody and prone to getting into fights at school while Simon is a bit quieter and enjoys spending time with animals. Older sister Mallory is a clever teenager who enjoys fencing and making wisecracks. The children are living at the estate with their mother after their parents' recent divorce. The children have been made aware that there are brownies or faeires living in the house. When Simon's cat Tibbs goes missing it is the first sign that things are not as they seem. When Jared learns from Thimbletack, the brownie who lives at Spiderwick Estate, that Simon has been grabbed by goblins, Jared and Mallory spring into action to get Simon back. With the help of Thimbletack and Arthur Spiderwick's "Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You", Jared and Mallory are able to locate a seeing stone device that will enable them to see the goblins on the property. Humans are unable to spot goblins without this seeing stone. With the aid of the seeing stone, Mallory fends off the goblins with her fencing skills and sends them into retreat mode. Mallory and Jared set off into the woods surrounding the estate to find Simon. Along the way they meet up with a sprite, a dangerous troll and a wounded griffin. Just as Jared and Mallory are about to rescue a caged Simon, they come face to face with a meddling goblin named Hogsqueal.
