After service with the New York Police Department and the Army in Cuba the position as Constable of Covens Hollow provided Kirk Van Pelt a comfortable semi-retired lifestyle. His glass eye, the result of battle wounds, was the only detriment to his career as a playboy.
Kirk is sent to the Nevada boomtown of Tonopah in pursuit of a bank thief. His mission is to return the scoundrel and the stolen funds. Various misadventures place him in a romantic relationship with a bordello piano player and in a cooperative arrangement with the Pinkerton's National Detective Agency. To futher complicate his task, he must solve a murder case for an incompetent sheriff. A jilted romance speeds his return to Covens Hollow and Kirk accepts employment as a Pinkerton operative. His first assignment returns him to the west and involves train robberies in Colorado. The investigation moves through the high mountains of Silverton and Creede where he leaves a trail of dead outlaws and encounters old acquaintances from Tonopah with unexpected results. | ||
