Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George

Julie of the Wolves is about a young Eskimo girl named Julie. Her father had disappeared sometime ago after going hunting and Julie is to be married to a boy named Daniel, without her say. At first, she doesn't care because most of her middle-school friends are married and they do not seem to care the least bit. But after meeting Daniel and living with him and his family, she realizes that he is a little bit mentally ill. So she finds the courage to run away.
But the wildness of nature in Alaska is not as gentle as it seemed in her old home with her father. But just as she is about to despair and lose hope, she finds a pack of wolves, or rather, a pack of wolves find her. At first, the wolves are shy as they were not near or around humans before. But Julie soon gains their trust and they have a strong friendship. But Julie must get to Chicago where her American penpal Amy, is waiting. Can Julie make it to Chicago safely?
