| Jim was a free black who was in love with a white woman whom nobody liked. Her name was Mag Smith and she married Jim only because he was the only person who cared about her. Soon, they had three, mulatto children. They are very happy but Mag is soon sick and tired of the treatment she receives from the white society because she is married to a black man. She wants Jim to die and he soon does, because of a sickness. Mag remarries to a white man named Seth. Seth likes a children a little bit, even though they are black. But Mag detests them.
When Seth and Mag decide to move to start a new life, Mag wants to sell her children. But nobody would buy them so she gives one to the Bellmounts. The child's name is Frado. She is a beautiful mulatto. She is only four but Mrs. Bellmount is very cruel to her. She beats Frado, calls her nig, and makes her do all of the household chores. Mrs. Bellmount's daughter Mary is also mean to her and even threw a carving knife at her. But Mr. Bellmount and his sons Jack and James are very kind to her. James makes sure that Frado is not beaten whenever he is around. And Jack realizes how lonely Frado is so he buys her a puppy named Fido. Frado is still very unhappy but the puppy cheers her up a bit. Soon, James is going to get married to a nice woman named Susan. They move away and promise to visit frequently. Jack goes to school so he is home at night when everyone is asleep and is gone by the time everyone is awake. So Frado is ill treated by her mistress and Mary. After awhile, James comes home, because he has a disease and needs the fresh air of the country. Frado is grieved by the state that he is in because he cannot walk without a cane and can only stay in bed. But James still does his best to make sure that Frado is not beaten. James is getting weaker and weaker and soon passes away. Frado becomes sick because she is beaten so often so she always stays in bed, with the doctor's orders. Mrs. Bellmount hates her so she kicks Frado out of the house. Frado lives with a kind, old woman named Mrs. Moore. Then, a young black man comes to call on her and they soon get married. | ||
