Nicky Wells is a gorgeous television commentator who has earned an impeccable reputation covering the world's hot spots and war zones.

On the surface Nicky appears to have it all - brains, beauty and a successful career. However, Nicky is missing a key ingredient - a lboyfriend. Nicky is gun shy after the suicide/drowing of her fiance, Charles Devereaux. Although it has been three years since his death, a part of Nicky has always been haunted by unresolved issues pertaining to his drowning death off the coast of Sussex. Although she has been friends with gorgeous photographer Clee Donovan for over two years, Nicky has never allowed herself to feel more for him than a friend. When Nicky and Clee meet up again in Beijing in 1989 to report on the student protests at Tiananmen Square, the two forge an incredible bond. Although Clee realizes that he has strong feelings for Nicky, he can't help but sense that she isn't quite over Charles. When Clee invites Nicky to stay at his farmhouse in Provence for some rest and relaxation, Nicky takes him up on the offer. When Clee joins Nicky in Provence, the two give in to their sizzling attraction and make love. As Clee and Nicky's relationship moves to a higher level Nicky suddenly starts to believe that she may have a romantic future with Clee. Suddenly, as Nicky is watching television news coverage of a shooting spree in Rome, she receives the shock of her life when she spots Charles in the crowd. Although Nicky tries to convince herself that she was mistaken, her gut instinct tells her that Charles is alive. In order to resolve the mystery of Charles' fake drowning/death and answer a host of unresolved questions, Nicky sets off across Europe in pursuit of Charles.
