Prior to Operation Iaqi Freedom, March 20th 2003, the Department Of Defense (DOD) screened and selected civilian reporters to be embedded with various units of the Armed Forces involved in the campaign.
Once such reporter, John Koopman, from the San Francisco Chronicle rode with Lt. Col Bryan McCoy (USMC) (callsign Darkside) battalion commander of 3rd Battlion, 4th Marine Regiment. Reporter Koopman submitted his daily engaging reports of the advancement on Baghdad from both Col. McCoy's and Sgt Major Dave Howell's humvees observing one of the hardest charging units of Gulf War II. He and 3/4 saw plenty of action, from the initial surge across the border on March 20th, to the fall of Baghdad with Mr. Koopman on occasion coming under fire himself. | ||
