Vivid by Beverly Jenkins

Nate Grayson, the Mayor of Grayson Grove, Michigan, is a man who no longer believes in love. Betrayed by his faithless ex-wife, Cecile, who married him solely to give her unborn child a name, Nate has vowed never to marry again. Viveca "Vivid" Lancaster is heading from San Francisco to Grayson Grove, Michigan via train in order to open a medical practice in Niles, Michigan. Nate is waiting at the train depot in order to welcome Doctor V. Lancaster as the town's eagerly anticipated physician. Nate is floored when V. Lancaster turns out to be a woman. Nate and Vivid immediately go head to head when Nate informs Vivid that he doesn't believe in female doctors. Although Vivid lays out her education and qualifications, Nate still insists that Vivid is too beautiful and citified to be a successful doctor in Grayson Grove. Nate's hateful words excite Vivid and she vows to succeed at her mission. Although Nate agrees to give Vivid time to prove herself he's banking on the fact that the lady doctor will fall flat on her face. On her first day in town Vivid meets Nate's daughter Magic and strikes up a friendship. Vivid is informed by Nate that she will be living in Doc Miner's old house which is right next door to Nate's house. Due to their close living quarters Vivid and Nate are thrown into each other's path quite frequently and they end up learning about each other's lives. Vivid learns that Nate's family founded the town of Grayson Grove and Nate learns of Vivid's Spanish/Black heritage and her familys' participation in the founding of Los Angeles. On Vivid's second day in town men line up in droves to court the lady doctor. Vivid makes it clear that she is not interested in a husband and is solely interested in pursuing a medical career. Although Nate appears to accept Vivid's presence in Grayson Grove he is silently determined to send her packing back to San Francisco. Over time Nate begins to realize that Vivid is nothing like his former wife Cecile. Vivid is hard working, sincere and dedicated to the people of Grayson Grove.
