Everyone Worth Knowing by Lauren Weisberger

Bettina "Bette" Robinson is a 27 year old banker working 80 hour weeks for a New York Company, UBS Warburg. Bette is sick and tired of the hours, the mind-boggling work and the neverending criticism of her boss, Aaron. Bette stuns herself when she up and quits on a spur of the moment decision. Bette's best friend, Penelope, who also works for UBS Warburg, can't really relate since she's relatively happy with her job and she has recently become engaged to boyfriend, Avery. Although Bette puts on a happy smile with regards to Penelope's engagement, she can't help but think that Avery doesn't deserve Penelope. Bette's gay Uncle Will and his partner, Simon, provide a sounding board for Bette as she struggles to move forward with her life and get a new job. Uncle Will is esctatic that Bette has quit her banking job because he's always felt that she was wasting her natural born talents at a stuffy bank. When Uncle Will comes up with the brainstorm idea of Bette working for his friend Kelly's public relations firm, Bette feels she is in no position to turn it down. Bette begins working for Kelly and Company, one of New York's hippest PR and event planning firms. Bette's main job is to go out clubbing to all the hot night spots and be seen and heard. Suddenly, Bette is thrust in a life and a lifestyle that is unknown to her. Bette is now rubbing elbows with famous people, gaining entry into the VIP rooms and making her way past the velvet rope with ease. When Bette meets Philip Weston, a New York attorney who is an infamous playboy, their relationship is featured in a nasty gossip column written by her high school nemesis, Abby. Despite public perception that she and Philip are an item, their relationship is lackluster and devoid of romance. Bette's boss is thrilled by all the publicity that Bette is generating. And when Penelope meets Sammy, who may be Mr. Right, her celebrity driven lifestyle may just drive him away.
