Book Review By Sandra Calhoune
My Outlaw by Linda Lael Miller

Seven year old Keighly Barrow is shocked when she sees a boy's image reflected in her grandmother's ballroom mirror in Redemption, Nevada. The boy is dressed in old fashioned clothes and he is in a western saloon. When Keighly confides in her grandmother about the strange vision from another time her grandmother confesses that she herself has seen strange images in the mirror. Her grandmother tells her that her house was previously a saloon named the Blue Garter. Throughout the next few years Keighly sees the young boy's image and even manages to communicate with him through the mirror although they cannot touch. Keighly holds up a piece of paper with her name written backwards on it. The boy does the same and Keighly discovers that his name is Darby. Years pass and Keighly's parents both pass away as well as her grandmother. Keighly no longer visits her grandmother's house, and although she wonders from time to time about Darby she no longer has access to the mirror. Keighly is now 30 years old and the owner of an art gallery in Los Angeles. Although Keighly has a relationship with her longtime lover, Julian, she is dissatisfied with their lackluster romance. Keighly finds herself yearning for Darby. Since Keighly inherited her grandmother's house in Redemption she has come to the realization that she must either sell the house or move into the house herself and pursue sculpting. Keighly visits the local graveyard in Redemption and finds Darby's headstone which reads 1857 -1887. Shortly thereafter, Keighly once again sees Darby's grown up image in the mirror. Although they both stare at each other longingly, they both realize that they cannot breach the mirror and connect. Keighly becomes obsessed with compiling information about Darby's life, his early death and finding a way to travel back in time to be with Darby.
