Book Review By Sandra Calhoune
Twins by Marcy Dermansky

Twin sisters Chloe and Sue are beautiful blonde twins growing up in New Jersey with two workaholic parents and a resentful older brother. Sue idolizes her twin while Chloe longs to break free from her sister and establish her own, separate identity. While Chloe gravitates towards the popular crowd, Sue attempts to solidify her bond with Chloe by getting tattoos of each other's name on their backs for their 13th birthday. Although Chloe doesn't want a tattoo Sue manipulates her twin by portraying it as an act of twin love. When Chloe makes friends with a classmate, Lisa Markman, Sue becomes consumed with jealousy and thoughts of harming Lisa. Sue can't handle the fact that Chloe is establishing an identity outside of their twin bond. When Chloe gets her period Sue lies and says that she got her period the day before Chloe got hers. Chloe tries to suppress her hunger while Sue eats enormous amounts of food then throws up. Sue constantly threatens to kill herself unless Chloe does as she asks. In a moment of rage Sue throws a ball at Lisa's face and breaks her nose. Over the course of five years Chloe attempts to break free from her manipulative twin while Sue alternates between despair, rage and self loathing. Ultimately, the two twins must follow their own path in order to achieve happiness.
